3 Ways to Go Bright for Summer Nights
August is the warmest month of the year for most of us here, so why not turn up the heat on our makeup and embrace the summer mood? Time to shelf the subtle, muted colours and make room for bolder, more vibrant looks as the sun goes down. This season, the pastel shades of last year have given way to bright, bold pops of colour, and for the classic smoky-eyed look, the black has been replaced with colourful, richly pigmented shades. So how can you go bright on these dazzling summer nights, and make sure your make-up stays up as late as you do? Here are our top tips for trendy evening make-up looks for Summer 2019.
Sandy tones and subtle coffees may look sophisticated during the day, but in the evening, there’s nothing stopping you from upping the ante a little and adding some colour! If you’re not quite ready to rock powder blue or neon green eyeshadow, you can take it down a notch by using a colourful eyeliner instead. The days of ‘you can wear any colour as long as it’s black’ are long gone, and now you can get eyeliners in every colour imaginable, including electric blue or passionate purple. Team it up with a quality mascara and you’ve got the perfect evening look.
This year’s big trend is experimental winged eyeliner, so practice with creatively designed tips, placed either along your lash line or even higher above it, to give you that exotic flourish to your look. Whether you go subtle with a tiny flick at the corner or go full-on Cleopatra, the winged eyeliner look is a huge fashion statement this year.
You can’t go wrong with red when it comes to evening lipstick colours, but be careful as to which one you choose. Not all reds are created equal – some will have a distinctly orange tinge while others veer towards the cooler end of the spectrum with a touch of blue. Pick your lipstick to suit your skin tone, and shop around to find one you like. Premium quality lipsticks from international brands like L’Oréal, Revlon and Maybelline have that all-important staying power too, so you won’t end up with lipstick on your teeth or on the rim of your glass.
Try not to skimp on the lip liner either, as it will help prevent colour ‘bleed’ and keep your lips perfectly defined. Pick a liner that’s as close to the colour of the lipstick you’re wearing as possible. If in doubt, go a shade lighter rather than a shade darker.
If you’re feeling brave, why not go for a showstopping colour like violet? Perfect for tanned summer skin, it’s a vibrant change to cooler weather colours such as plum, or coffee and is guaranteed to turn heads at that cocktail party. It’s edgy, it’s urban, and it’s right on-trend.
By day, you want a poreless, matte look to your skin that’s light and fresh but also flawless. As the sun starts to go down, you can dial things up a notch with a dewy look that shimmers and emphasises those high cheekbones. While silica powders are the traditional way to achieve this, they can look a little ‘caked’ after a few hours on the dancefloor. A modern alternative is to use a serum to give you that fresh, moisturised look without too much shine. Try a highlighter such as L’Oréal’s Liquid Glow to sculpt and emphasise the area above the cheekbones, just below the eye socket, down the centre of the nose, and on the tip of the chin. The secret to that perfect look is to spend time blending so you don’t end up with hard ‘stripes’ that look unnatural.
With just a few good quality items including a winged eyeliner pen, a creamy, long-lasting lipstick and skin serum or a highlighter, you can transform your usual look into a bold, bright one for those fun summer nights.
